Sensex ends higher for 4th day, Nifty above 8800 on global rally

Equity benchmarks closed rangebound session on a positive note Monday following the rally in global peers ahead of central bank meetings in the US and Japan.

The 50-share NSE Nifty held psychological 8800 level throughout the session, up 28.55 points at 8808.40.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 35.47 points at 28634.50 while the broader markets outperformed benchmarks, up over half a percent.

Experts say investors remained on sidelines as they cautiously waited for the outcome of two-day Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan's meeting later in the week.

The US Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise interest rate anytime this year. It might look at raising rates by middle of next year, Herald Van Der Linde of HSBC says.

After the equity rally since March, a big move of volatility is expected in the next couple of months, he feels, saying the downside risk to India will be low as compared to other markets like Thailand and Indonesia.

Sensex rises 186 pts but ends off day's high, snaps 2-week rally

Equity benchmarks closed off day's high after losing half of gains in last couple of hours of trade Friday. The Nifty failed to hold the psychological 8800 level on account of profit booking in select banking & financials stocks and amid caution ahead of Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting next week.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 186.14 points at 28599.03 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 37.30 points at 8779.85 whereas the broader markets ended marginally lower on weak breadth

About 1412 shares declined against 1315 advancing shares on the BSE.

ITC and Hero MotoCorp were top gainers in trade today while Reliance Industries hit 27-month high intraday, closing with a gain of 1 percent.

However, HDFC and ICICI Bank dragged the market from day's high while ITC, HDFC Bank and Infosys provided support.

WALL ST RALLIES AS TRADERS REASSESS FED OUTLOOK; DOLLAR SLIPS

US stocks led global shares higher on Monday after Federal Reserve policymakers sounded cautious notes on near-term interest rate increases, while the US currency slipped.

The probability markets assigned to a Fed rate hike at next week’s meeting fell to 15 percent from 24 percent on Friday according to CME Group’s Fed Watch tool.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 239.62 points, or 1.32 percent, to 18,325.07, the S&P 500 gained 31.23 points, or 1.47 percent, to 2,159.04 and the Nasdaq Composite added 85.98 points, or 1.68 percent, to 5,211.89.

A gauge of equities across major markets .MIWD00000PUS turned positive on Brainard’s remarks after falling 1 percent earlier in the session. It was last up 0.3 percent.

European stocks ended down 1 percent, cutting an earlier loss in half. Asian stocks finished lower, tracking Wall Street’s large decline on Friday. Nikkei futures .NKc1 were flat after having fallen more than 1.5 percent earlier.
